奥运会金牌其实不是纯金的。有两方面的原因，一是成本太高了，如果做成纯金，光金牌一项成本就得花8、9亿，很多国家难以承受。二是为了体现奥运精神“更高、更快、更强”，减少为了获得价值不菲的纯金而不择手段的可能性。
奥运金牌其实是银镀金，但奥委会也规定金牌至少6g黄金和92.5%以上的白银。大小直径至少60毫米、厚度至少3毫米。既美观又性价比高。
